Breezaire Buying Guide

Breezaire is the longest-running self-contained cellar cooling line in the residential category. 30+ year track record. Quieter than most competitors. Simpler electronics with fewer failure points. This is the buyer's guide for picking the right WKL or WKSL.

What Breezaire makes

Two self-contained product lines. No ducted units, no split systems. Breezaire's choice is to do one thing well rather than cover every install category.

WKL series (standard depth)

18-3/4 inches deep. Designed for installation in standard 2x6 framed walls. The unit protrudes slightly into both the cellar and the exhaust-side room.

Six models, sized by approximate cellar capacity:

  • WKL 1060: up to 140 cu ft (small closet)
  • WKL 2200: up to 265 cu ft (medium closet)
  • WKL 3000: up to 400 cu ft (large closet, small room)
  • WKL 4000: up to 650 cu ft (small dedicated room)
  • WKL 6000: up to 1,000 cu ft (medium dedicated room)
  • WKL 8000: up to 1,500 cu ft (top of the line, larger residential)

WKSL series (slimline)

12 inches deep. For installations where wall depth is restricted: shallow framing, glass-wall cellars, retrofit work where the existing framing is fixed and shallow.

Same capacity range as WKL. Costs roughly 15% more for the equivalent capacity. Slightly different aesthetics (more recessed appearance).

Picking by cellar size

Cellar size R-19 walls, 75°F ambient R-13 walls, 80°F ambient R-30 walls, 70°F ambient
100 cu ft WKL 1060 WKL 2200 WKL 1060
250 cu ft WKL 2200 WKL 3000 WKL 2200
400 cu ft WKL 3000 WKL 4000 WKL 3000
650 cu ft WKL 4000 WKL 6000 WKL 4000
1,000 cu ft WKL 6000 WKL 8000 WKL 6000
1,500 cu ft WKL 8000 Move to ducted WKL 8000

Manufacturer ratings assume R-19 walls and 75°F exhaust ambient. Hot ambient or thin insulation pushes the choice up a size. Better insulation or cooler ambient lets the unit handle the upper end of its rated range.

Why Breezaire's noise advantage matters

The Breezaire WKL line is meaningfully quieter than the competition at every capacity tier:

  • WKL 1060 / 2200 / 3000: 47-50 dB at 6 feet
  • WKL 4000 / 6000: 52 dB
  • WKL 8000: 56 dB

For reference, a WhisperKool Platinum at the same capacity runs 51-56 dB across the line. The 4-5 dB difference is noticeable inside the cellar and from adjacent spaces. For cellars where the unit will be installed near a living room or master bedroom, Breezaire is often the right answer for that reason alone.

The WKL vs WKSL decision

Pick WKL when: standard new construction or remodel with 2x6 framing, the exhaust side is utility space (basement, garage-adjacent mechanical room), aesthetics of the unit's profile aren't a primary concern.

Pick WKSL when: glass-wall cellars where the unit will be visible from the cellar side, very shallow partition walls where the WKL would protrude unacceptably into the adjacent room, retrofit installations where existing framing depth is restricted.

The slimline costs 15% more and has comparable cooling performance. Don't pay the premium unless the install geometry actually requires it.

Ambient operating range

The smaller Breezaire units (WKL 1060, 2200, 3000) are rated for 55-85°F exhaust ambient. Narrower range than WhisperKool's Platinum line. Important if your install will see ambient above 85°F in summer (hot basements, attic equipment rooms, hot garages) or below 55°F in winter.

The larger units (WKL 4000, 6000, 8000) extend the range to 50-95°F, which is competitive with most alternatives.

Install requirements

Drain line

Critical. Breezaire condensate drains must slope downward 1/4 inch per foot for the entire run. The most common Breezaire service issue is drain blockage from an uphill run or sagged tubing.

Electrical

115V, 15-amp dedicated circuit. The larger units (WKL 6000, 8000) draw 6-8 amps continuous.

Rough opening dimensions

Vary by model. WKL 1060: 9-3/4 x 19-3/4 inches. WKL 8000: 11 x 25 inches. Frame with structural lumber.

Exhaust-side air volume

Minimum 100 cubic feet of conditioned air per 1,000 BTU/hr of cooling output. Critical for the smaller units in basement utility spaces; ample for the larger units in dedicated mechanical rooms.

Warranty and serviceability

Standard Breezaire warranty: 2 years parts and labor on the unit, 5 years on the sealed refrigeration system. The fan motor, thermostat, and control board are user-replaceable.

Breezaire's competitive strength is the simplicity of the product. Fewer features means fewer failure points. WKL units routinely run 15+ years in residential service; the long-running examples in our customer base are at year 18 and still on the original compressor.

The competitive weakness is the smaller US dealer network compared to WhisperKool. Parts are available but service techs familiar with the brand are less widespread.

How we recommend picking

For residential cellars where noise matters (living-space adjacent, master bedroom adjacent, formal entertaining spaces): Breezaire WKL is the strongest residential self-contained option. Match the capacity to the cellar size and the ambient conditions.

For larger cellars (above 1,500 cu ft) or installs with extreme ambient conditions: WhisperKool Platinum has the wider range and the larger Platinum 8000 option, so it may fit better. Compare on our WhisperKool vs Breezaire piece.

For glass-wall cellars or shallow-framing situations: WKSL is the right answer.
