WhisperKool Buying Guide

WhisperKool makes residential and light-commercial cellar cooling units across three product lines: the through-wall Platinum series, the ducted SC PRO series, and the ductless split systems. This is the buyer's guide for picking the right SKU.

The three lines

Platinum series (self-contained, through-wall)

The workhorse line. Units install in a framed opening between the cellar and an adjacent space, with the cold side facing the cellar and the hot side dumping heat into the next room. Single housing, single penetration, no ducts. The simplest and most common cellar cooling install.

Capacity range: 200 to 2,000 cubic feet.

Models in current production: Platinum 1600 (up to 200 cu ft), Platinum 4000 (up to 650 cu ft), Platinum 8000 (up to 2,000 cu ft).

SC PRO series (ducted)

The unit lives in a remote mechanical room or attic. Insulated supply and return ducts route to the cellar. The cellar itself stays quiet (around 30-35 dB at the supply grille) because the compressor is somewhere else. More install complexity, more cost, dramatically quieter result.

Capacity range: 400 to 2,000 cubic feet.

Models: SC PRO 3000, SC PRO 4000, SC PRO 8000 (each in ducted configuration).

Ductless split systems

Two-piece installation: indoor evaporator inside the cellar, outdoor condenser outside the building, refrigerant lines connecting them. The quietest cellar-side option of all (under 30 dB at the evaporator). Requires EPA-certified installer.

Capacity range: 400 to 1,500 cubic feet.

Picking by cellar size

  • Under 200 cu ft (small closet, 3x5x8 or smaller): Platinum 1600. Self-contained through-wall, simplest install.
  • 200-400 cu ft (medium closet): Platinum 1600 at the smaller end, step up to a smaller Platinum unit or Breezaire WKL 3000 at the larger end. The Platinum line jumps from 1600 to 4000 with nothing in between, so the 200-400 band sometimes pushes buyers toward Breezaire.
  • 400-650 cu ft (large closet or small room): Platinum 4000. Standard closet-conversion fit.
  • 650-1,000 cu ft (medium room): Platinum 4000 at the lower end, Platinum 8000 at the upper end. Or step up to SC PRO 4000 ducted if noise matters.
  • 1,000-2,000 cu ft (large room or wine wall): Platinum 8000 or SC PRO 8000 ducted. The ducted version is the better choice in noise-sensitive locations.
  • Above 2,000 cu ft: ducted or split systems only. Self-contained units run continuously and wear out years early at the top of their range.

Picking by ambient conditions

WhisperKool's Platinum series carries the widest ambient operating range in the residential category: 50-95°F exhaust ambient on most models. That's important for installs where the exhaust side hits 85°F+ in summer (hot basements, attic-adjacent equipment rooms) or where winter ambient drops near the low end.

For ambient conditions outside 50-95°F, look at CellarPro instead (some models rated 40-95°F). For installs that stay comfortably within range, WhisperKool is the better choice on US dealer support and parts access.

Picking by noise tolerance

Platinum series: 51-56 dB at 6 feet (manufacturer spec). Audible if you stand next to it during compressor runs. Inaudible from elsewhere in the house through a solid-core cellar door and insulated walls.

SC PRO ducted: 32-35 dB at the cellar grille (just airflow). The compressor lives in the mechanical room at 60+ dB but that's contained.

Ductless split: 25-30 dB at the cellar evaporator. The quietest option.

For cellars adjacent to bedrooms, master suites, or formal dining rooms, the ducted or split investment is worth it. For cellars in basements or utility-adjacent spaces, Platinum self-contained is fine.

Install requirements

Electrical

115V, 15-amp dedicated circuit recommended for all Platinum and SC PRO units. The larger units draw 6-8 amps continuous with startup spikes. Sharing the circuit with other loads leads to breaker trips.

Framed opening (Platinum series)

Dimensions vary by model. Platinum 4000 needs roughly 13 x 32 inches. Platinum 8000 needs 13 x 32 inches as well (similar housing). Frame with structural lumber, not just drywall; the unit's weight (130-145 lbs) needs real support.

Exhaust-side ventilation

The hot side dumps heat. The space it vents into needs enough air volume to absorb it (roughly 100 cubic feet per 1,000 BTU/hr) or its own ventilation to a larger space. Insufficient exhaust-side air causes thermal runaway: the heat dumped raises ambient on the unit's intake side, which makes it work harder, which dumps more heat.

Drain line

Condensate must drain by gravity at 1/4 inch per foot minimum slope. Uphill drains cause water backup and ice formation on the evaporator. Where gravity isn't available, use a condensate pump ($80-200).

Warranty and serviceability

Standard WhisperKool warranty: 2 years parts and labor on the unit, 5 years on the sealed refrigeration system. The fan motor, control board, and thermostat are user-replaceable. Compressor and refrigerant work require service techs.

WhisperKool maintains the largest US authorized dealer and service network in the residential cellar cooling category. Parts ship from US warehouses, which matters during a service event. Average tech response time in major metros is 5-10 business days.

How we recommend picking

For most residential cellars in basements or utility-adjacent locations: Platinum 4000 for closet conversions, Platinum 8000 for medium-to-large rooms. The simplest install, the cleanest support relationship, the strongest warranty position.

For cellars adjacent to bedrooms or formal entertaining spaces: SC PRO ducted in the same capacity range. Adds $1,500-2,500 to install cost; eliminates cellar-side noise entirely.
