Three install patterns, three price tiers, three sound profiles. The right choice depends on where the compressor lives and how much hidden infrastructure your build can handle.
Self-contained
The whole refrigeration cycle lives in one box. Mount it through an exterior wall, vent into an adjacent unconditioned space, plug it in, done.
Best fit: rooms under 1,000 cubic feet with exterior wall access. The Breezaire WKL and WKCE series handle 90% of these installs.
Tradeoff: the compressor sits inside the cellar. Sound levels run 50 to 55 dB at the unit, which is louder than a household refrigerator. Acceptable for storage-only cellars. Less acceptable in tasting rooms next to the dining table.
Install cost: lowest. Equipment plus a stud-bay opening plus a 240V outlet.
Split
Compressor lives outside the cellar, evaporator hangs inside. Connected by refrigerant lines like a mini-split air conditioner.
Best fit: finished interior rooms with no exterior wall available. Common in basement cellars surrounded by finished space. WhisperKOOL SC Pro handles 200 to 8,000 bottles.
Tradeoff: the cellar runs near-silent, 38 to 42 dB. The compressor lives in a garage, attic, or mechanical room. You pay an HVAC tech to braze refrigerant lines (usually $400 to $800 extra).
Install cost: middle. Equipment plus refrigerant lineset plus tech labor.
Ducted
Condenser lives fully remote, connected only by hidden ductwork. The cellar shows no equipment, only a return vent and a supply vent.
Best fit: high-end builds where the cellar doubles as a tasting room and the homeowner pays extra to hide the gear. Custom cellars in eight-figure homes typically spec ducted.
Tradeoff: highest install cost. Cellar mechanical contractor required. Ductwork has to land somewhere.
Install cost: highest. Equipment plus ductwork plus contractor labor.
Decision tree
- Exterior wall available and noise is okay: self-contained
- No exterior wall, finished space: split
- Cellar is the room you entertain in: ducted
