Cellar Cooling Systems
Once you cross 500 bottles or need a dedicated room, you stop buying a fridge and start buying a system. Here is how to choose the right one without overpaying or undersizing.
Fridge vs system: when to switch
A wine fridge is a self-contained cabinet. A cellar cooling system is a refrigeration unit you install into a room you have already built or are building. Below 500 bottles, a cabinet usually wins on cost and footprint. Above 500 bottles, or any time the room is dedicated to storage, a system is the right answer because it scales with room volume, holds humidity precisely, and runs quieter at the bottle count where it matters.
The three system types
Self-contained
One box, easy install. The whole refrigeration cycle lives in a single unit that mounts through the wall or sits inside the cellar with a duct to the outside. Best for purpose-built rooms under 1,000 cubic feet. Lowest install cost. Some noise inside the cellar because the compressor is inside the unit.
Split
Compressor outside, evaporator inside. Connected by refrigerant lines like a mini-split air conditioner. Much quieter inside the cellar because the noisy half lives outside. More flexible install, more ductwork, higher install cost. Standard choice for finished interior spaces where you cannot vent through an exterior wall.
Ducted
Hidden ductwork from a remote condenser. The cellar shows no equipment at all, only a return and supply vent. Highest cost, most expensive install, fully invisible. Right answer for high-end builds where the cellar doubles as a tasting room.
BTU sizing in two minutes
The BTU output you need depends on four variables. Get them wrong and the unit either runs constantly and dies young, or short-cycles and lets humidity swing.
- Room volume in cubic feet: length × width × height
- Insulation R-value of the walls, ceiling, and floor. A finished basement room with R-13 walls behaves very differently from an exterior-walled spare bedroom
- Ambient temperature outside the cellar on the hottest day of the year. A garage cellar in Phoenix needs more BTU than a basement cellar in Vermont
- Door usage in opens per day. A tasting room cellar opened thirty times a day at a dinner party loses more cold air than a storage cellar opened twice a week

Brand picks
| Brand | Best for | Why |
|---|---|---|
| WhisperKOOL | Premium cellar systems, 200 to 3,000+ bottles | Quietest in class. Strong split and ducted lineup. The brand custom-cellar builders specify most often. |
| Breezaire | Self-contained units, rooms up to 1,000 cubic feet | Made in USA. Simple install. Reliable inverter compressors with five-year coverage. Best price-to-spec ratio for through-the-wall installs. |
Install considerations
- Exterior wall access: self-contained units need a path to vent waste heat. Split and ducted systems do not need exterior wall access in the cellar but need somewhere to put the condenser
- Power: most residential systems run on a dedicated 120V or 240V circuit. Confirm with your electrician before you frame the room
- Drain: the unit produces condensate that has to go somewhere. Gravity drain to a floor drain is cleanest; a condensate pump works if gravity is not an option
- Insulation: the cellar walls, ceiling, and floor should be insulated to at least R-19 for a working storage cellar. Higher is better and lowers BTU requirements
- Vapor barrier: install on the warm side of the wall. Skipping this is the most common build mistake; you cannot retrofit it without tearing into the wall
What to send us before you order
- Room dimensions (length, width, height)
- Insulation R-values and wall construction
- Climate zone or hottest expected ambient temperature
- How you will use the cellar (storage, tasting room, mixed)
- Constraints on the install: exterior wall access, dedicated electrical, drain path
