Buyer's guide

Everything to know before you buy

The same conversation our specialists have with new buyers on the phone. Eight chapters, five minutes, plus a 60-second sizing quiz.

Pick your capacity

Start with how many bottles you store today, then add 30 to 40 percent for the next five years. Buyers regret undersizing more than oversizing.

Under 50 bottles

Countertop, slim freestanding, or a single-drawer built-in. Best for kitchens with a steady weekly rotation.

50 to 200 bottles

Dual-zone built-in or freestanding cabinet. Reds and whites at different set points, kitchen-island install ready.

200 to 500 bottles

Large-capacity cabinets or a small walk-in. Buyers building a real collection start here.

500+ bottles

Walk-in cellar with a ducted or split cooling system. Custom racking, climate controls, sometimes a second zone.

60-second sizing quiz

How many bottles today?

Where will it live?

Reds and whites?

Single zone vs dual zone

One zone holds the whole cabinet at one set point. Two zones lets you split reds and whites without compromise.

WineIdeal serving tempLong-term storage temp
Full-bodied reds60-65°F55°F
Light reds55-60°F55°F
Whites45-50°F50-55°F
Sparkling40-45°F45-50°F

If you store mostly reds, single zone at 55°F is fine. If you split your collection across reds and whites and pull bottles to drink the same week you buy them, two zones earn their keep.

Built-in vs freestanding vs countertop

The biggest install mistake is putting a freestanding unit in a cabinet. The compressor needs to vent or it cooks itself.

  • Built-in vents through the front grille. Safe to slide flush into a counter-depth cabinet. Required clearance: typically 1/8 inch each side, 1 inch behind.
  • Freestanding vents through the back. Needs 3 to 4 inches of clearance behind, 2 inches each side. Putting one in a cabinet voids the warranty on most brands.
  • Countertop sits on the counter and vents around the sides. Easy install, lowest capacity, best for one or two cases.

Check the manufacturer's BTU spec against the cabinet ventilation. We do the math for free on the phone if the unit is borderline.

Brand comparison

All four brands are good. They're good at different things. We're an authorized reseller for every one.

Cellar cooling systems

Once you cross 500 bottles or need a dedicated room, you switch from buying a fridge to buying a system.

Self-contained

One box, easy install. Mounts through the wall. Best for purpose-built rooms under 1000 cubic feet.

Split

Compressor outside, evaporator inside. Quieter, more flexible install. Standard for finished spaces.

Ducted

Hidden ductwork from a remote condenser. Highest-end, most expensive, fully invisible.

BTU sizing depends on room volume, insulation R-value, ambient temperature, and door usage. A call with a specialist sizes this correctly the first time.

Noise, vibration, UV

A wine fridge runs for a decade. The specs that matter day to day are not the ones on the marketing page.

Noise

Look for 40-45 dB on the inverter compressor spec. Quiet enough for an open kitchen.

Vibration

Inverter compressors run smoother than standard. Vibration disturbs sediment in long-aged reds.

UV

Solid door or triple-pane low-E glass with UV-block coating. Light degrades wine over years.

Warranty, install, delivery

Every unit ships with the full manufacturer warranty. We are an authorized reseller for every brand we sell, so the warranty is honored in full.

  • Free shipping to the continental US on every order, no minimum.
  • White-glove delivery available on cellar-system orders. We quote it when you call.
  • Manufacturer warranty typically 1 to 2 years parts and labor, longer on compressors. We file the claim with the manufacturer on your behalf.
  • Returns within 30 days on stock units. Custom configurations are non-returnable.

The 7 questions to ask before you buy

Run this list past any seller. If they cannot answer, you are buying from the wrong place.

  1. Is this unit built-in or freestanding rated?
  2. What is the BTU output and what room volume does it cool?
  3. Inverter compressor or standard? What is the dB rating?
  4. Single zone or dual zone? What is the temperature range for each?
  5. What is the manufacturer warranty and who files the claim if something fails?
  6. Is shipping included? Curbside or in-home?
  7. What happens if the unit arrives damaged?
